Resident Evil 5 should never be remade but Resident Evil 6 is fine – Reader’s Feature

As fan theories run wild over the true nature of Resident Evil Veronica, a reader has very specific ideas about what to do about Resident 5 and 6.

Earlier this week a reader mentioned a theory, that I hadn’t heard of before but has apparently been around before, that Capcom is playing up the ‘V’ in Resident Evil Veronica in order to make it the ‘new’ Resident Evil 5. Nobody is quite sure what that means but because Resident Evil 5 is so important to the story of Wesker, the theory is that all that stuff will be moved over to Veronica, which already stars both him and Chris Redfield.

Resident Evil 5’s setting was dodgy even when it came out in 2009 and I sure wouldn’t want to be the developer having to work on a remake and someone making it less racist but still keeping enough that you could tell it was the same game. It’s a hornet’s nest and considering the game itself is only okay I just don’t think it’s worth, and I think Capcom probably feels the same way – despite what they were hinting this week.

There’s plenty of ways to still make a push for co-op, either in the next mainline game or a new Revelations game (or remakes of the Revelations games, which I feel are very underrated). You don’t need Resident Evil 5 and I can totally see how the remake series can do without it, especially as none of the other games have ever gone back to co-op partner Sheva anyway.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica is very underappreciated by Resident Evil fans because a lot of people have never played it, because it started off as a Dreamcast game and it has a weird name that makes it sound like it’s not mainline, even though it’s much more important to the overall story than Resident Evil 3 – who’s plot can be summed up as ‘Jill Valentine didn’t die.’

The Resident Evil remakes have almost been too successful for Capcom, because they’re running out of good ones to do and the only other one that deserves to be redone is Resident Evil 1, which I’m sure they will get round to – just as the rumours claims.

It already has a remake but that’s a GameCube game, so I think it’s absolutely fine to have another one, especially as I’m sure this one wouldn’t have fixed camera angles. The only thing I wonder about is how this is going to work with Resident Evil Zero, half of which (the worst half) takes place in the same location.

Zero was always a cheap cash-in and there was a lot of reused assets from the first Resident Evil 1 remake, so it’s going to be a bit odd to get its remake before the first game. What I suspect Capcom will do is keep much more of the game on the train, and maybe invent a new location, and then just end with a shot of the mansion that can lead into the Resident Evil 1 remake.

None of the Resident Evil remakes have been 1:1. There wouldn’t be any point given the whole concept is based on using new technology. So I have absolutely no problem with completely redoing the not-so-good entries in the series with completely new sections, as long as they keep the same general idea as the original.

Which brings me onto Resident Evil 6. As GC themselves have said there’s really nothing from that game worth saving. Nobody misses the character of Jake, nobody wants to redo any of the scenes with modern graphics (the graphics were always really good and still stand up) and even the Leon sections were rubbish.

However, if Resident Evil Veronica stands in for 5, what do you do about 6? My suggestion is to complete redo everything. If you remember, Resident Evil 6 featured a worldwide BOW outbreak which was suddenly completely gone and nobody talked about by Resident Evil 7. So there’s really no need to follow anything that happened in the original game, because none of it is ever referenced again.

You could keep some of the locations maybe, like the opening in China, and some of the monsters were cool, but otherwise just go wild and basically make a new game. Except… keep the co-op in there. That way you’re still not missing anything from not remaking Resident Evil 5 and you can experiment for maybe the next game in the mainline series.

I don’t know if Capcom will be following all this logic but if Veronica does take the Wester parts out of Resident Evil 5 I think their master plans is going to be very similar to what I’ve said.
