In baseball, no matter the opponent, a four-game sweep is a monstrous deal. The Boston Red Sox just managed to pull one of those off Thursday with a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Shocking right? Not long ago, they were struggling. They wrapped up a 7-1 road trip, and with complete swagger. At the center of it all was none other than Trevor Story. The $140 million man who reminded everyone why Boston really signed him.
Story had wasted no time making a mark. He launched a solo homer in the first inning – his 22nd hit this season. But it was not just his bat doing the work. In the fifth, with the game tied and two Baltimore Orioles in scoring position, Jackson Holliday lined a rocket right in the middle. And yes, you bet Story did a full dive and then fired to the third to double off the runner and snuff the rally.
It was a play that left onlookers in awe. Alex Cora, after the game, said, “The play by Trevor. That was the game changer. Just a good player playing elite baseball. We’re very proud of him.” And well, this seems to be the vibe in the clubhouse altogether—everyone just appreciative of each other, sometimes even cracking puns and jokes.
“I think every time he pitches, it’s the Garrett Crochet game… it’s a tight knit crew.”

Starting pitcher Garret Crochet, who had battled through six innings of two-run ball, had admitted that Story’s defense made the night easier. “I was joking when he was coming in; it was the Trevor Story game today,” Crochet smirked. “You can always just count on him to make the high-IQ play.” But Story was not letting Crochet hand him all that credit.
The shortstop also fired back, saying, “No, I think every time he pitches, it’s the Garrett Crochet game… we’re a tight-knit crew.” And well, Trevor Story’s night was not done dazzling. In the ninth inning, with Boston in a one-run lead, Steven Matz allowed a leadoff double. When Alex Jackson ripped a ball in the middle, Story snagged it and peeked at the runner and then fired it to Bregman at third in perfect timing. It basically killed the Orioles’ chance.
Later, Story explained, “Communication is everything. We knew they’d try to get that runner over. If it’s hit hard at me, I’m taking a peek to make a play. [Bregman] was ready and made a great tag.” Then two flyouts later, the Boston Red Sox complete the sweep. Now they are getting ready for the weekend with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Are the Red Sox Finally Back?
Honestly, it was not long ago when the Boston Red Sox were questioning if Cora’s time in Boston was done for. Now those same fans are watching the team pull off a feat that they had not done in years. For once, they are looking like real contenders again. This sweep of the Orioles they managed was more than just another tally in the standings.
This swap pushed Boston to 15 games over .500 for the first time since 2021. It’s a mark that almost felt out of reach a couple of months ago. Because this team was not doing great in the first half, right? By the end of May, Boston was sitting at 27-29 and buried in fourth place in the AL East. Fans were restless, especially given that the team has missed the playoffs for three straight years. The last time the Boston Red Sox even tasted October was in the 2021 ALCS.
However, something has clicked after the All-Star break. The bats woke up, the pitching is okay, and Boston is looking like a team meant for October. They are now at 75-60 and have a 2.5-game cushion in the AL Wild Card race while also staying at a good distance from the Blue Jays, who also lead the division. Now, of course, the regular-season milestones don’t mean that much. Because fans won’t remember this sweep. The true test is coming in October; still, for the first time, Boston looks like they are ready to face the challenge.
