EastEndersRavi Gulati’s (Aaron Thiara) mental health issues hit a terrifying crescendo next week, as the true extent of how unwell he’s become is revealed to his family.

Ravi’s done some truly heinous things in his time on Albert Square, but perhaps the worst was setting up a drugs racket, cuckooing vulnerable Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho), unleashing the vicious Tobias ‘Okie’ Okyere (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu) on Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) whom he’d also trapped in the operation, leading directly to his debilitating addiction, Okie’s death and the imprisonment of Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian).

Turning informant to escape a prison sentence, the pressure of his double life weighed heavily on his shoulders, and his expulsion from the family home by Suki and Eve Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal and Heather Peace) followed by a vicious beating orchestrated by his shadowy boss sent him into hiding.

When he re-emerged, he found himself squarely in the sights of Harry and his fearsome mum, Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington), who, determined for him to feel the same pain as Harry, drugged his drink.

Suffering from terrifying hallucinations, Ravi savagely beat his son, Nugget Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), his drug-induced haze convincing him that he was his evil dad, Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry).

Waking up bloodied and confused, he was horrified to realise what he’d done, his guilt compounded further when Nugget was diagnosed with epilepsy as a direct result of the battering.

Nugget’s mum and Ravi’s beloved girlfriend, Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan-Levy) convinced Ravi to keep his involvement between them, but he longed to unburden himself amid Nugget’s difficulty with adjusting to his new reality.

Ravi turned to self harm to deal with his inner pain, with Priya only discovering when tending to him after an animalistic battering from Mark Fowler Jr (Stephen Aaron-Sipple), who’d arrived in Walford on behalf of Ravi’s boss to smoke out the rat in their organisation.

While Priya took Ravi to the doctors, they were told it’d be a long wait for therapy, leaving her in a constant state of panic that Ravi’s mental health would continue to worsen.

When Nugget discovered that Will Mitchell (Freddie Phillips) had filmed him having a seizure and uploaded it online, a confrontation ensued with Will and his parents, Honey (Emma Barton) and Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), with Nugget left deeply disappointed when Ravi fails to defend him in his usual manner.

Later, an incident with Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) alerted Suki to Ravi’s troubles, and though she offered to pay for private therapy, Ravi was more angry than grateful that Suki knew about his internal battle.

Nugget Gulati and Priya and Avani Nandra Hart facing off with Ravi Gulati
The ‘reset day’ turns sinister (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron)

Next week sees Priya return Ravi to hospital after another episode of self harm. Later, when Ravi discovers Nugget confronting Will and his friends in McClunky’s, he sees red and rages at them, before declaring that the entire family; Priya, Nugget and daughter, Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), must return to the flat.

While Ravi initially sells the situation as a ‘reset day’ with a plethora of games and movies, it becomes clear to Priya that Ravi has no intention of letting anybody leave.

As tensions begin to simmer, Ravi reveals a devastating truth.

Priya is forced to suggest that the entire family flee Walford for their safety in an effort to free them, though when Ravi realises they’re heading to the hospital, Nugget suffers a seizure, the calamity causing a collision with Max Branning (Jake Wood) and Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins).

A desperate Ravi flees the scene, and Priya finds him back on the Square, sat on the bridge, teetering desperately on the edge, both mentally and physically.

Though she manages to talk him down, it’s painfully evident that there’s serious work to be done to pull the family back together.
