Collin Murray-Boyles has taken a small step toward a return.

The Toronto Raptors rookie was back at practice on Tuesday in Toronto to test out his thumb injury, per Ryan Wolstat of Postmedia.

Murray-Boyles said he is “striving” to return to action during the team’s five-game road trip, which begins Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls.

“It hurts to sit on the bench and watch, (knowing) that I can, you know, make an impact, but we’ll see. You know, we’re striving for it. But no promises,” he said.

Murray-Boyles has not played since Feb. 25 against the San Antonio Spurs.

He has dealt with a lingering thumb injury for much of the season, causing him to miss several games. He suffered the initial injury on Dec. 15 against the Miami Heat and re-aggravated the issue in late January against the Los Angeles Lakers, missing four games as a result.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a solid rookie year in Toronto, averaging 7.9 points, five rebounds, two assists and 1.8 steals plus blocks per game. He started 21 games as the Raptors dealt with the absence of everyday starting centre Jakob Poeltl.

The Columbia, S.C., native was drafted ninth overall by the Raptors last June.
