The 2025 spy thriller “The Amateur” is officially scheduled to join the Max library on October 17, 2026. The film’s move to the platform follows a successful theatrical run and earlier streaming windows, positioning it as a notable addition for fans of grounded espionage drama.

Directed by James Hawes and based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell, the film stars Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a CIA cryptographer. While much of the film’s marketing has highlighted the presence of Jon Bernthal, he appears in a supporting role as Jackson “The Bear” O’Brien, a veteran CIA operative. The narrative follows Heller as he seeks revenge after his wife is murdered in a terrorist attack, forcing the desk-bound intellectual into the field.

The film’s journey to its new streaming home comes after a solid commercial performance. According to financial data from The Numbers, “The Amateur” earned approximately $96 million at the global box office against a production budget of $60 million. Its theatrical success was mirrored by a strong reception from general audiences, even as professional critics remained divided on the project.

While the film holds a mixed 61% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its audience score sits significantly higher at 88%. According to IGN, the film is one of the key acquisitions for Max’s late 2026 lineup, offering a contrast to the more traditional blockbusters typically found on the service.
