PS5 Price Criticized by Capcom President Amid Increases

It seems the recent PS5 price increases being made around the world isn’t just hurting consumers. Capcom President Haruhiro Tsujimoto names the hardware’s steep cost as a reason for potentially inadequate sales.

Capcom President believes the cost of entry to play Monster Hunter Wilds on PS5 is steep

In an interview with Nikkei Gaming (H/T Automaton), Tsujimoto discussed Capcom’s goal of selling 10 million units of Monster Hunter Wilds within the first month of release, which the company did achieve. He then stated some of the barriers the company has to overcome to reach those numbers, with the most prominent barrier being pricing.

Tsujimoto comments that Capcom considered the PS5 the main platform for Monster Hunter Wilds. In Japan, the console costs around 80,000 yen. Factoring in the cost of the game and a monthly PS Plus subscription, players are spending 100,000 yen when they purchase the console. The price disparity between this and older titles like Monster Hunter World or Monster Hunter Rise is extremely significant. These were some points the company had to make when determining sales goals for its games.

“That’s correct. However, we also found that the ‘PS5 barrier’ is unexpectedly large. The console costs about 80,000 yen in Japanese yen. When you factor in the cost of software and monthly subscriptions, it comes to about 100,000 yen at the time of purchase. This is not an amount that can be easily reached, especially for younger generations. This situation is not limited to Japan, but is similar overseas as well.”

As Tsujimoto mentioned, the PS5 price hikes are not limited to Japan. Very recently, Sony increased the price of its family of PS5 consoles by $50 in the US. The most expensive option is the PS5 Pro, which is now $749.99.
