Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary was first published in 2021 while a blockbuster movie adaptation is currently in cinemas. In the film version of the modern sci-fi classic, Ryan Gosling plays science teacher Ryland Grace who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. As well as figuring that out, he must also work out why the sun is dying.

Project Hail Mary is a critical and commercial success. The film is reported to have already grossed more than $400million and has a 94 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, Andy Weir has confirmed a sequel will launch later this year in the form of mixed AR/VR game Journey Among The Stars. The project has been developed by Maze Theory, who are behind Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom and Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time, with Amazon also involved in the creation of the game.

“Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more,” Andy Weir said in an announcement video. “This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality.”

Journey Among The Stars is based on a new chapter Weir wrote specifically for the game, which will see you play as Rylan Grace at a “pivotal, untold moment” in the Hail Mary mission. Alien companion Rocky will also feature. “It is, as Weir intended, a story about the first true friendship between species, and mixed reality makes that feel real in an entirely new way,” explained a press release (via IGN).

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars is due to launch late 2026. Speaking about a full-blown sequel to Project Hail Mary, Weir recently told the New York Times that he had plenty of “ideas” but none that were “good enough”. He’s currently working on a new book that “is not a sequel to anything that I’ve written.”

In other news, Konami has confirmed that Canadian musician Pilotpreist will be composing the soundtrack for Silent Hill: Townfallcheck out the first song here.
