All the way back in 2022, approaching Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power with skepticism made sense. The entertainment world's current era of reboots is arguably more frequent, less thoughtfully produced, and less well-received by general audiences. A prequel to the events depicted in director Peter Jackson's revered The Lord of the Rings trilogy could've easily been a derelict attempt to capitalize on nostalgic iconography, no matter how much lavish beauty the show mined from its astronomical budget. Fast-forward to 2026, and overwhelming success emerged from that leap of faith. The Rings of Power has defied expectations to become a sterling example of contemporary high fantasy television, and it's as thrilling an adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's Legendarium as legally possible — capturing his defining philosophies with heartfelt grace, contemplative nuance, and a visible passion for its, well, legendary source material.
