Popular Horror Franchise Is Being Rebooted, Will Star Justin Long

A popular horror franchise is getting rebooted with Justin Long.

Long has starred in a number of horror movies throughout his career, including 2001’s Jeepers Creepers, 2009’s Drag Me to Hell, 2014’s Tusk, 2022’s Barbarian, 2023’s It’s a Wonderful Knife, and more. He’ll soon be seen in a vampire cop movie titled Night Patrol, which will be released in theaters next January.

What popular horror franchise is being rebooted with Justin Long?

Per Variety, Long is now attached to star in a reboot of Grave Encounters. He is also producing the movie alongside his wife, Kate Bosworth.

Released in 2011, Grave Encounters is a Canadian found footage movie written and directed by Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, also known as The Vicious Brothers. It stars Sean Rogerson, Ashleigh Gryzko, Merwin Mondesir, and Mackenzie Gray.

“A reality show crew filming inside an abandoned mental hospital realizes that the building is not only haunted, but isn’t going to let them leave,” a description of the movie reads.

While Grave Encounters wasn’t a huge hit at the box office at the time of its release, it’s since accumulated a cult following. A sequel, Grave Encounters 2, was released in 2012, while there were also plans for a third movie that ultimately never came to fruition. 

Minihan and Ortiz are developing the new Grave Encounters movie. They will also serve as producers, as will Shawn Angelski.

“Our creative connection with Colin was undeniable on Coyotes, and we wanted to continue that relationship as quickly as possible,” Long and Bosworth said in a statement. “He is a very rare combination of brilliant filmmaker and fun collaborator, and we are thrilled to help him resurrect a new imagining of one of his first horror gems, Grave Encounters. Grave Encounters has such a passionate fan base, and we include ourselves among them. We hope to honor the legacy of the original film, while unleashing something even darker.”

Production is expected to begin next year. A release date has not yet been set.
