Jalen Duren’s contract standoff with the Detroit Pistons has taken another turn. And the change could remove one of the biggest obstacles between the two sides. Detroit has pulled a controversial weight condition from its 5-year, $200 million offer, while a separate trade scenario involving Anthony Davis has also surfaced.
For a franchise that has spent weeks insisting it wants to keep Duren, both developments point in the same direction.
The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Hunter Patterson reported that the franchise has removed the weight clause from the offer. League sources told the reporters that the stipulation, which was part of the 5-year, $200 million proposal, is no longer included in the talks.
Most importantly, sources confirmed to the reporters that the team never put the weight clause in writing.
The change comes with Jalen Duren still unsigned and the deadline approaching. He can accept Detroit’s $200 million offer or take the $9.6 million qualifying offer. It would put him on track for unrestricted free agency next summer. The 22-year-old is eligible for 5-year, $287 million after averaging 19.5 ppg double-double last season. He also earned his first All-Star selection and All-NBA Third Team honor.
The weight condition has become a particularly sensitive point because Duren’s camp did not receive it well. The Pistons tied their concerns to his conditioning. Meanwhile, the young center’s breakout season had given him considerably more leverage than he possessed a year earlier.
There was another surprise in the same report.
Earlier, Amick and Patterson confirmed that the Washington Wizards would be interested in a potential Duren-for-Anthony Davis trade. However, hours after the original report, they scrapped it, leaving no confirmed trade scenario.
However, the Pistons have continued refusing to engage in sign-and-trade discussions involving Jalen Duren. And the AD scenario does not appear to interest Detroit.
That matters because Washington only recently moved into the Anthony Davis era. The veteran big man is entering the 2-26-27 season with the Wizards after missing almost all of last season, while Washington has built a new-look roster around him and Trae Young.
For Detroit, the refusal to discuss big-man trade reinforces the message coming from the front office: The Pistons still want Jalen Duren. President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said at Media Day that the team would be “excited to have him in” regardless of which contract decision he makes.
It also implied that Duren was a huge reason for the team’s success over the previous two seasons.
Ironically, the weight clause also carried extra significance because of Langdon’s previous experience. During his time with the Pelicans, Langdon was part of the front office that gave Zion Williamson a five-year, $197 million extension in 2022. That contract included weight and body-fat requirements, with portions of Williamson’s salary tied to meeting those conditions.
Langdon is now trying to build the Pistons. And the Duren negotiations brought a similar concept into the conversation.
At Media Day, he even referenced his Pelicans experience. “I was in New Orleans for five years with a certain player that wasn’t easy to deal with either. We can control what we can control.”
That background helps explain why the condition appeared in Detroit’s proposal. But Jalen Duren’s camp clearly didn’t welcome it. The weight condition, tied to Duren’s conditioning, drew immediate pushback from his representatives, who viewed it as insulting given his breakout season. The Pistons have now removed the clause, eliminating the most contentious part of the offer while keeping the $200 million figure on the table.
Meanwhile, the Anthony Davis trade talk has not changed the Pistons’ position.
Washington may have an interest in Duren, but the Pistons are still refusing to engage in those discussions. Everything points back to the same question: Whether Jalen Duren is willing to accept Detroit’s revised offer and remain the centerpiece of the franchise.
