Richard Linklater‘s Merrily We Roll Along, featuring Paul Mescal, is sparking curiosity about its 2040 timeline. The musical is based on Stephen Sondheim’s beloved 1981 show.
During an interview at the Zurich Film Festival, filmmaker Linklater revealed that Merrily We Roll Along will come out in 2040. Now, the big update has led several fans to wonder whether such a long time is even necessary, citing multiple factors.
Reacting to the film’s 2040 release window, one user, @PipsyMomma, simply wished, “Hope I’m alive to see it!”
One fan, @hecalexopoulos, pointed out that the cast consists mostly of adult actors for such a long filming period. They wrote, “Hopefully there’s a large child cast to see them grow up.”
Another fan, @capeh9rny, expressed some concerns for the movie while presenting a hypothetical scenario. They wrote, “What if AI takes over and the world ends before 2040?”
One user, @NicoXSwan, didn’t seem intrigued by the 20-year production length. They feel the gap won’t feel that dramatic, considering the “way actors take care of themselves nowadays and advances in health nd cosmetic stuff.”
Richard Linklater is taking a very different approach to his latest musical
Richard Linklater is shooting Merrily We Roll Along in nine sections across 20 years. The film will take even longer than Boyhood, which was made over 12 years.
In a recent interview, the Boyhood director revealed, “When I was doing Boyhood, we worked in complete anonymity. No one knew about the film. This one, on the other hand, because it’s a Stephen Sondheim musical and it’s very public, I have to answer this question for 20 years while we’re making it.”
Linklater also raised the possibility of unpredictable fates during filming. However, he is not too concerned about them. “There’s always an extreme thing that would prevent it from being made. But I was like, ‘Well, that usually doesn’t happen,’ and you gotta believe in collaborating with the future of some kind.”
Merrily We Roll Along will see Mescal playing Franklin Shepard, alongside Beanie Feldstein as Mary Flynn, and Ben Platt as Charley Kringas.
