Verity director Michael Showalter has revealed that one of the film’s most memorable scenes wasn’t actually in the original script.

Anne Hathaway plays the title role in the new erotic thriller, taking the leading role in a cast that also includes Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.

In Verity, the Oscar winner plays a celebrated author, who is unable to complete the final instalment in her most popular book series after an accident leaves her physically incapacitated.

To resolve this, her husband sets about recruiting a younger author, who he welcomes into their home to finish the manuscript for her and… well… you can probably guess where it goes from there.

One steamy scene – set in Dakota’s character’s imagination – sees the dysfunctional trio all locking lips with one another, which was actually the brainchild of the movie’s two female leads.

“Anne and Dakota were like, ‘What if we started kissing? What if it’s Josh, but then Josh turns into Anne?’,” the director told The Independent.

“It was first like, ‘we can’t do that’. Then, ‘we have to do that, and if it doesn’t work, then we won’t put it in the movie’.”

“But it works quite amazingly,” he enthused.

The outlet noted that author Colleen Hoover – who penned the book on which Verity is based, and worked closely with the filmmakers in bringing the movie to life – was originally hesitant about this sequence, but it wound up becoming one of her favourite scenes in the film.

Speaking about shooting the kissing scene, Dakota told Extra: “I would kiss Annie for the rest of my life every day. If you need me, I’m there.”

“I am married so kissing is off the table,” the Devil Wears Prada star later told The Hook. “But we could have a very platonic love affair, and I would be completely thrilled”

Verity is in cinemas now.
