Olivia Wilde went ‘all in’ for her I Want Your Sex BDSM role
Olivia Wilde committed fully to the demanding role of Erika Tracy in I Want Your Sex, according to director Gregg Araki. Reflecting on the casting process, he recently explained what convinced him she was the right choice for the film. The director also discussed the performances delivered by co-star Cooper Hoffman and the qualities he was looking for in both lead actors.
During an interview with GQ, Araki was asked how he developed the chemistry between Wilde and Hoffman. The director credited the casting process rather than any rehearsal technique, saying, “I didn’t do anything. I cast them, that’s basically it. I’m a director where it’s 99% casting. I’m very particular in the casting process. Once you have it, it’s just a matter of not f—ing it up and capturing it on film.”
Araki then recalled his first meeting with Wilde, explaining that he believed the role required complete commitment. “When I first met with Olivia, I told her whoever plays this part has to not give a f—. And Olivia really got it. She loved the script from the start. She dove in the pool and was like, ‘I’m all in, bring it on.’ She was so the exact right person for this part,” he said. Araki also praised Wilde’s screen presence, comparing her to classic Hollywood stars such as Rita Hayworth and Ingrid Bergman.
The director also reflected on casting Cooper Hoffman, admitting he was initially uncertain before watching the actor’s audition. “Then Cooper put himself on tape, and he was great. He was barely 21 when we did the movie, but for such a young actor, he has such gravitas and presence,” Araki said.
Directed by Gregg Araki, I Want Your Sex is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 31, 2026.
