The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is set to return with a comprehensive remake launching on November 5, 2026. Developing the title as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo is moving beyond standard graphical updates by integrating the console’s hardware into the core musical mechanics that defined the original 1998 classic.
The most significant shift in gameplay involves how players interact with the titular instrument. While traditional button inputs remain an option, the remake utilizes the Switch 2’s built-in microphone to allow players to trigger in-game songs by humming or whistling the melodies. This microphone recognition system is designed to identify the specific notes of legendary tracks like “Zelda’s Lullaby” or the “Song of Storms,” effectively turning the player’s own voice into a controller.
Players can use humming or whistling to perform in-game melodies.
The Zelda Notes Companion Experience
To complement the console experience, a new mobile application titled “Zelda Notes” will serve as a digital bridge for players. The app features a virtual playable ocarina, allowing users to practice songs or compose original melodies on their phones. These custom scores can then be shared with other players via QR codes.
Beyond music, the app introduces the “Gossip Quest” feature. This system provides players with hint images on their mobile devices that correspond to hidden locations within Hyrule. By analyzing these visual cues on a second screen, players can track down secret grottos and items without interrupting the main gameplay flow on the console.
Mechanical Overhauls and ‘Threads of Time’
The remake introduces several fundamental changes to the way Link traverses Hyrule. For the first time in this specific title, the “automatic jump” mechanic has been replaced with a dedicated jump button, giving players manual control over platforming and combat movement.
To manage the game’s sprawling narrative, Nintendo has implemented the “Threads of Time” system. Rather than a standard quest log, story progress and objectives are tracked on an interactive digital tapestry. This UI element visually maps out the relationships between characters and the consequences of time travel between Link’s youth and adulthood.
The 'Threads of Time' system visually maps the player's journey across Hyrule's history.
Softonic has reported that the remake features fully voiced cutscenes for all characters except Link.
Launch Details and Pricing
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will be available in two formats. Softonic has reported that the digital version of the game is priced at $60, while the physical edition is $70.
While rumors have circulated regarding the involvement of Monolith Soft in the development, Nintendo has not yet officially confirmed the specific studio behind the remake.
