We are five years into the PS5 generation. Usually, this would mean we’re passed the halfway point of the console’s life, with the PS6 potentially coming in the next two or three years. Despite that, a Final Fantasy dev claims that there really isn’t a need for new hardware just yet.
Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida says there’s “no real need” for PS6
In an interview with Feed4Gamers, Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida, commonly known as Yoshi-P, gave his take on bringing the MMORPG to next generation platforms like the PS6.
“Of course there is always the possibility of providing our game on those platforms, because my aim is to provide Final Fantasy XIV to as many players as possible,” says Yoshida. “And so if there is an increase in platforms, we would work on providing the game on those platforms. Specifically with regards to the recent platforms, they are quite high spec and so it’s easier for us to work with them compared to back in the days. So I don’t think any addition of hardware is a negative in that regard.”
Although Yoshida says there is a possibility Final Fantasy XIV could be on next generation hardware, he also remarks that there doesn’t seem to be a “real need” for new hardware like the PS6.
“But when I look at things from a gamer’s perspective, I feel that there’s no real need to make new hardware, because I think right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, the PS5 or the Switch 2. And honestly, from a gamer’s perspective as well, hardware is just expensive to buy,” Yoshida continued.
While some could probably argue about whether players are happy with current gen hardware, it is a fact that consoles are very expensive, which is a large barrier to entry when it comes to gaming. Recently, Sony raised the price of its family of PS5 consoles by $50. So, players who want to purchase the new PS5 Pro will now have to shell out $749.99 to get the latest hardware.
