The NFL has suspended referee Adrian Hill and line judge Jeff Seeman for “unprofessional conduct” toward players during Week 4 games. The disciplinary actions, announced Monday, October 5, 2026, by NFL Vice President of Officiating Ramon George, represent a rare public move by the league to address the behavior of game officials during on-field confrontations.
Jeff Seeman received a two-game suspension following the New York Giants’ 36-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The incident occurred with approximately five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Following a third-and-2 play that included a controversial no-call for pass interference, Seeman appeared to swear at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride on camera.
Line judge received a two-game suspension following a verbal exchange with a Cardinals player.
Adrian Hill was issued a one-game suspension for his conduct during the Minnesota Vikings’ 15-10 win over the Miami Dolphins. During the game, a three-way collision occurred after a dead-ball whistle when Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II accidentally pushed Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson into Hill. The referee reacted angrily toward Wilson in the immediate aftermath.
Despite the league’s disciplinary action, Wilson downplayed the confrontation following the game. The linebacker characterized the interaction as a “high-energy moment” and noted that Hill apologized to him later in the contest.
A Shift in Official Accountability
The decision to sideline two officials simultaneously for conduct-related issues is unusual for the league. While the NFL has issued suspensions to officials in the past, such as the 2015 suspension of Rob Vernatchi, those instances typically involved technical errors like clock mismanagement rather than verbal outbursts or interpersonal conduct.
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) had previously signaled that player-official relations were a point of concern. NFLPA Executive Director JC Tretter released a statement following the league’s announcement, describing the behavior of the officials as “unacceptable.” Tretter’s statement emphasized a desire for officials to be held to the same accountability standards as players, who are regularly subject to fines and suspensions for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The league has not yet announced which officials will replace Hill and Seeman for their respective Week 5 assignments. It also remains unclear if the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) intends to appeal the suspensions on behalf of Hill and Seeman.
