PS5 action adventure game Senua

An upcoming PS5 action adventure game that was revealed earlier this month might not even see the light of day. Developer Ninja Theory announced Senua, the third game in its Hellblade series, at the Xbox Showcase on June 7. But according to a new report, Microsoft had already decided before the event that it would offload Ninja Theory or, in the worst-case scenario, shut it down.

PS5 action adventure game Senua reportedly showcased to attract buyers for Ninja Theory

This news comes from the reliable journalist Stephen Totilo, following reports from several outlets, including Bloomberg, that Xbox is set to undergo another bloodbath of mass layoffs and studio closures. Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, and Double Fine are all reportedly on the chopping block unless they can pay their way to independence or find suitable buyers.

According to Totilo, Microsoft had already made up its mind about Ninja Theory, and the reason the studio was allowed to reveal Senua at the Xbox Showcase was to attract a buyer for the studio.

“The thinking was that the promise of a newly announced game would help draw investor interest,” Totilo claimed to have heard from his source.

Whether Ninja Theory will be able to go independent or find a buyer remains to be seen. But if efforts to save the studio aren’t successful, suffice it to say the story of Senua will be over before it begins.
