New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that fast bowler Will O’Rourke will miss the upcoming home ODI and Test series against India to prioritize his recovery for the year-end tour of Australia. The decision, announced on October 10, follows a series of soft-tissue setbacks that have sidelined one of the Black Caps’ most productive recent performers.
O’Rourke is currently managing a dual injury involving a left hamstring tear and a calf muscle strain. The hamstring issue was originally sustained during the final Test against England in August, while the calf injury occurred more recently during training as he attempted to return to full fitness.
O'Rourke's absence adds to New Zealand's mounting injury list ahead of the India series.
The medical staff and team management have opted for a cautious approach, viewing the India series as too high a risk for a premature return. Instead, the focus has shifted entirely to the Trans-Tasman Trophy. New Zealand’s tour of Australia is scheduled to begin on December 9, 2026, at Perth Stadium, marking the first four-Test series between the two nations since 1999.
O’Rourke has quickly become a pillar of the New Zealand pace attack, taking 49 wickets in his first 14 Tests at an average of under 25. His absence from the India series, which includes five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests starting October 22, leaves a significant gap in the bowling rotation.
The injury to O’Rourke is part of a broader fitness struggle within the New Zealand camp ahead of the India visit. Batsman Mark Chapman and bowler Zak Foulkes have also been ruled out of the India T20I series due to hamstring and hip flexor injuries, respectively. New Zealand Cricket has named Josh Clarkson and Blair Tickner as their replacements in the T20I squad.
To prepare for the Australian summer, coach Rob Walter has set a target for O’Rourke to return via domestic cricket. The current plan involves the pacer appearing for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December. Successful completion of those domestic overs would clear the path for him to join the squad in Australia, where New Zealand will look to improve their standing in the World Test Championship.
While the loss of O’Rourke for the home summer is a setback for New Zealand’s immediate depth, the workload management reflects the high priority placed on the four-match schedule in Australia. The decision to rest O’Rourke is a precautionary measure to ensure he is fit for the four-Test tour of Australia in December 2026.
