Netflix has spent plenty of time developing potential flagship properties over the years, but few have returned on that investment as much as Stranger Things. The show first premiered in 2016 as a small-time supernatural kidnapping thriller, but by the time its final season arrived last year, creatives had earned a blank check to spend as much money and take it in any direction they desired. As is to be expected with any show that attracts such a large audience, the ending of Stranger Things was quite divisive among the fan base — most would agree it avoided the same disaster-level ending as Game of Thrones, even if it did play things a bit safe. The story of Stranger Things is far from over now that Season 5 has come to a close, though.
