New Sekiro TV Show Based on Beloved Video Game Finally Gets a Big Release Date Update

A new Sekiro anime TV series has been given a release window following its theatrical release in Japan. The anime is based on the popular video game, which launched on March 22, 2019, for the PlayStation 4 and other modern consoles.

The official website for Sekiro: No Defeat announced that the anime will be released in January 2027. This series will consist of 8 episodes and will be available on the popular anime streaming platform Crunchyroll. However, no official date has been provided yet. Sekiro: No Defeat is based on the critically acclaimed video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, developed by FromSoftware, Inc. Additionally, this announcement came just days after the anime’s theatrical version debuted in Japan on September 4, 2026, and it continues to run due to popular demand. The movie ranked ninth at the box office on opening weekend and seventh in the first-day satisfaction ranking at Filmarks, with an average score of 3.53/5.0 based on 733 reviews, according to Crunchyroll.

What do we know about Sekiro: No Defeat

The theatrical version is a condensed edit of the eight episodes set to air next year. According to the official website, the anime will add more cuts to the series, including new scenes for a reconstruction.

According to the official description, Sekiro: No Defeat is a fully hand-drawn anime produced by KADOKAWA, Qzil.la, and ARCH. The anime will adapt the game’s story, which follows “a tale of loyalty, blood, and sacrifice set in a fantastical reimagining of Sengoku-era Japan.” This expanded episodic format will offer audiences a deeper dive into Wolf and Kuro’s journey.

The adaptation is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, with Kaito Moki as the Chief Animation Director, Takashi Mukoda as the Action Animation Director, and Yuji Kaneko as the Art Director. Takahiro Kishida served as the character designer, with Azusa Sasaki as the color designer. The cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro/The Divine Heir, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina.
