Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur provided the most optimistic update to date regarding the status of star pass rusher Micah Parsons, suggesting the three-time All-Pro could return to the practice field as early as next week. When asked on Monday if Parsons might finally begin his acclimation period, LaFleur responded, “I sure hope so.”
The comment marks a significant shift in tone from the Packers’ coaching staff. In previous weeks, LaFleur had been quick to offer a “hard no” when questioned about Parsons’ availability for practice. This change in messaging signals that Parsons is entering the final stages of a grueling 10-month recovery process following major knee surgery.
Parsons has undergone a 10-month rehabilitation process following reconstructive knee surgery.
Parsons has spent the entirety of the 2026 season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. He suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee on December 14, 2025, during a game against the Denver Broncos, and underwent reconstructive surgery on December 29, 2025. While some early optimistic projections targeted a Week 6 return, the Packers medical staff has reportedly adhered to a strict “nine-month rule” from the date of surgery to ensure the long-term stability of the knee, pushing his return toward the end of October.
The timing of the potential return aligns with the Packers’ upcoming schedule. Green Bay is set to host the Carolina Panthers this Thursday, October 29. Because of the short turnaround, Parsons will not play in that contest. However, the Thursday night game is followed by a “mini-bye” week, giving the team a 10-day gap before their November 8 matchup against the New England Patriots. This window provides a logical opportunity for the team to open Parsons’ 21-day practice window.
Once the Packers officially designate Parsons to return to practice, they will have 21 days to evaluate his fitness and decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve. If he is not activated by the end of that three-week period, he would be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.
The Packers currently sit at 4-3 and find themselves in fourth place in a highly competitive NFC North. While the defense has remained functional, the pass rush has lacked consistent dominance. In his absence, Green Bay has relied on a rotation featuring Lukas Van Ness and Brenton Cox to man the edges.
According to reporting from TSN, LaFleur’s refusal to rule out an imminent return suggests that Parsons has met the necessary strength and agility benchmarks required by the team’s training staff. His return would provide a significant boost to a defensive unit looking to gain ground in the divisional race during the second half of the season.
