Mazda North American Operations reported its best-ever September sales result in the brand’s history, moving 34,519 vehicles last month. This performance represents a 31.9% increase compared to September 2025, driven by a significant surge in demand for the brand’s traditional passenger cars and its core SUV lineup.

While the market has trended toward larger vehicles, Mazda’s enthusiast-focused models saw some of the most dramatic gains. The Mazda3 reported a 146.9% increase in sales, totaling 3,704 units for the month. Simultaneously, the MX-5 Miata continues to hold its ground in the sports car segment with 689 units sold—a 31.5% jump over the previous year. Within the Miata lineup, the hardtop RF model led growth with a 38.9% increase.

SUV Performance and Hybrid Adoption

The CX-5 remains the volume leader for Mazda North American Operations, accounting for 11,345 units in September, up 37.8%.

Electrified options are becoming a more prominent part of the brand’s sales mix. Both the CX-50 Hybrid and the CX-90 MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) achieved their best-ever September sales volumes. This shift suggests growing consumer interest in Mazda’s powertrain diversification as it integrates more hybrid technology into its crossover range.

The total monthly volume was supported by a slight difference in the calendar; September 2026 contained 25 selling days compared to 24 in the same month last year. When adjusted for the Daily Selling Rate (DSR), Mazda’s growth remains a robust 26.6%.

Contextualizing Year-to-Date Trends

Despite the record-breaking September, the broader 2026 calendar year has been more modest for the automaker. Year-to-date sales currently sit at 310,268 units, which is a 2.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

This slight annual decline is partly attributed to the CX-5’s long-term performance; while it had a strong September, its year-to-date sales are down 9.5% at 95,762 units. However, the momentum gained in the third quarter, led by the massive spike in Mazda3 interest and the stability of the CX-90, suggests the brand is recovering volume as it heads into the final quarter of the year.
