Mayo Clinic Launches Platform_Orchestrate to Accelerate Clinical Development

What You Should Know

Mayo Clinic Platform announced the commercial launch of a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Clinical Decision Support (CDS) solution designed to embed curated medical knowledge directly into clinician EHR workflows. The solution is available to internal Mayo Clinic clinicians and external healthcare organizations participating in Mayo Clinic Platform’s healthcare provider programs. The architecture directly addresses cognitive overload and information fragmentation, reducing the requirement for physicians to exit the electronic health record to cross-reference multiple disparate medical reference resources.

Subspecialty Chat and Multimodal Calculators

Rather than requiring clinicians to open separate web browser tabs or log into standalone clinical portals, the CDS solution is designed to sit directly within the primary EHR interface:

Subspecialty-Specific Clinical Chat (35+ Specialties): Powered by an integrated large language model (LLM), the chat tool mirrors Mayo Clinic’s subspecialty practice model. It allows clinicians to reason through complex patient presentations using natural language queries, automatically citing relevant peer-reviewed biomedical literature in its responses. Continuous Daily Knowledge Ingestion: Unlike static foundation models bound by retrospective training cutoff dates, the specialty chat tool is updated daily, ensuring emerging clinical trial results, revised guideline statements, and newly issued drug safety warnings are indexed alongside established clinical pathways. Voice- and Chat-Enabled Clinical Calculators: The suite includes 22 clinical risk and diagnostic calculators accessible via text chat or conversational voice dictation. The calculator library integrates industry-standard clinical risk stratification algorithms alongside proprietary risk-scoring tools developed and validated by Mayo Clinic investigators.

Preserving Clinical Judgment

Designed to function strictly as an augmentative copilot rather than an autonomous prescriber, the system maintains clear boundaries. Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Distinguished Chief Medical Officer for Mayo Clinic Platform, noted: “The CDS solution is designed to assist healthcare professionals as they make patient care decisions; it does not replace clinical judgment. Mayo Clinic physicians have provided feedback on the different tools to ensure the solution supports clinicians and reflects Mayo Clinic’s approach to patient care.”
