There is one Avengers: Endgame mystery Marvel should never explain.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America travels back in time and returns the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines. While speaking with CBR, Joe and Anthony Russo revealed they “circled the idea” of showing how Chris Evans‘ Captain America put the stones back. Ultimately, they passed.
“I think we toyed around with an idea of like, ‘Is there a montage where he puts the stones back?’ We felt like it just played past the ending,” Joe Russo said. “We were like, ‘It seems like much more complicated than a montage could sustain.’ And so we didn’t do it.”
Instead of a montage, fans have been calling for a Disney+ show or movie about Captain America returning the Infinity Stones. Joe Russo even agreed that it’s a “great idea.” It might be a wonderful idea to some, but this story should never become an MCU reality.
Captain America’s unanswered Avengers: Endgame question should remain a mystery
Some things are better left unsaid. Not every MCU mystery or unanswered question needs an explanation. There needs to be some ambiguity. The Russo Brothers handled Captain America’s final moments in Avengers: Endgame perfectly. He returned the stones, passed the shield to Sam Wilson, and got his happy ending with Peggy Carter. Why disrupt that ending?
In Avengers Endgame: Encore, the Russos altered Captain America’s ending. TVA agent Loki interrupts Peggy and Steve’s dance and offers them help, which sets up the plot in Avengers: Doomsday. Changing a movie’s ending is a dangerous precedent that Marvel must avoid whenever possible. Avengers Endgame: Encore should be an exception, not the norm.
I was not totally against the Captain America and Infinity Stones solo movie or a Disney+ show at one point. If Marvel released that Captain America special before Avengers: Doomsday to show how Steve Rogers can return, that would have made sense. It would have been a justifiable movie or show.
Now, it’s too late. Marvel should be looking to the future, not the past. The Multiverse Saga is coming to an end with Doomsday and Secret Wars. Then, it’s straight into the Mutant Era. Evans’ Steve Rogers should not be in the MCU’s plans past Secret Wars. It’s time for the MCU to embrace its new faces, like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
Not every cool idea needs a movie. Captain America’s trip to the past should remain a mystery.
