Martin Scorsese Reunites With Taxi Driver Writer Paul Schrader For New Movie

Martin Scorsese is once again teaming up with his longtime collaborator Paul Schrader for the latter’s new movie. The news of the reunion comes just weeks before the film’s launch at the Venice Film Festival.

The Basics of Philosophy is an upcoming drama written and directed by Paul Schrader. According to a recent report by Deadline, Martin Scorsese has come aboard the project as an executive producer, with Noora Films joining to represent international sales.

Schrader has previously written for some of Scorsese’s most memorable movies in the 70s and the 80s. They are Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation Of Christ. Scorsese also joined Schrader’s movie as an executive producer once before in the latter’s 2021 movie, The Card Counter.

The Basics of Philosophy cast, plot and Venice premiere details

The Basics of Philosophy follows a philosophy professor who is struggling with guilt over a past decision after the victim unexpectedly returns to his life. The film is part of Paul Schrader’s “man in a room” stories that began with his screenplay for Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. It also includes his movies, First Reformed, The Card Counter, and Master Gardener.

Jack Huston plays the protagonist Dr. John Jorrisen in The Basics of Philosophy. Other cast members of the movie include Sofia Boutella, Daniel Zovatto, Bill Pullman, Dana Delany, Shiloh Fernandez, Karl Glusman, and Elizabeth Petruso.

The film is produced by Braxton Pope under his Film Maudit banner alongside Redline Entertainment’s David Wulf. In addition to Scorsese, executive producers include Steven Demmler, Santosh Govindaraju, Franklin Laviola, Nicholas Laviola, Jeff Rice, Brando Eaton and Richie Walls, Landon Ash, Joel Michaely, Kyle Stroud, and Francis Chapman.

Pia Patatian from Noora Films recently said in a statement, “The Basics of Philosophy is exactly the kind of bold, elevated project that represents where we want Noora Films to be. We are excited to work with Paul Schrader again and support a film with genuine international potential.”

The Basics of Philosophy will have its world premiere out of competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2026.
