Linwood Boomer said Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair was envisioned as a singular story, casting doubt on Season 2’s chances. However, he did not completely rule out the possibility of a follow-up installment happening eventually.

While speaking with ScreenRant, Boomer said that he viewed the new chapter in the beloved sitcom series as “a one-and-done.” Highlighting Bryan Cranston’s busy film and theater career, he acknowledged that it would not have materialized in the first place if designed otherwise. Meanwhile, Tracy Katsky, also present in the interview, joked, “He’s very fancy.”

Boomer also brought up Frankie Muniz’s packed schedule, reasoning that making a full series with him and Cranston was tricky because of it. However, he fondly recalled bringing the sitcom back, labeling it “a really fun experience,” and added that a future season could happen if things lined up in “a very particular way.” The creator shared, “I don’t know that I’ll be around if it takes another 17 years for it to happen, but maybe one of my kids will do it.”

Elsewhere, in a separate interview with Collider, Boomer suggested that viewership numbers would play a role in the decision to make more seasons of the Malcolm in the Middle revival. “Well, it depends on how it does,” he stated. “There’s a certain number, and I don’t even know what it is, and I don’t even know what it’s measuring.” He continued, “But some piece of data has to hit a certain number, and if it’s one shy, they won’t ask, and if it’s one over, they will ask, but not until then.”

Katsky, meanwhile, revealed that discussions about future installments weren’t happening.
