Of course tube drivers are important for keeping London running smoothly (Letters, 11 September). But how about a mention for bus drivers who, when working hours and holiday entitlements are taken into account, earn about half of what a tube driver earns? Is driving a tube train really twice as difficult as driving a bus? Also, London bus drivers carry a million more passengers a day than tube drivers.

• Boris Johnson was paid £5m from 34 paid appearances (The Boris Files, 9 September). This is an average of £147,000 per speech – proof that there’s a lot of money in flannel, wiff-waff, waffle, bluster and blather.
