Larry David‘s new comedy series has drawn mostly positive reviews from critics. However, they are nowhere near as positive as the ones Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm received. David’s latest offering, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, is a sketch comedy limited series that he developed with Jeff Schaffer. Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions has produced the series, which seeks to retell important moments of American history from a comedic perspective, marking the country’s upcoming 250th Independence Day.
Critic reviews on Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness has drawn largely favorable responses from critics. Rebecca Nicholson of The Financial Times wrote, “The sketches can feel a little long and their bitty nature means that the show’s rhythm…can feel relentless. But at its best, the show is Curb Your Enthusiasm in period costume, and as such it is a treat.”
TheWrap‘s Thelma Adams also had good things to say about the series. “Apparently, when a comic legend works with Obama on a comedic retelling of the great and not-so-great moments of American history on our 250th anniversary, the standards are high,” Adams shared.
Meanwhile, Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence noted, “It appears that even Larry David has had enough of what’s been going on in America in 2026. And when David has something to say, he says it at full volume.”
However, Nick Schager of The Daily Beast gave a less favorable review. “Takes a simple premise—what if David annoyed people throughout American history?—and hammers viewers over the head with it for thirty minutes at a time,” Schager wrote.
