Lanterns Season 2 gets a promising update from James Gunn amid pending renewal status. The DCU co-CEO has seemingly fueled speculation about the show’s future in a new social media comment.

On Monday, Gunn made a Threads post ahead of the Lanterns Season 1 finale next Sunday. “I’ve seen Lanterns 500 times and even I’m excited for next week’s finale,” the filmmaker wrote.

When one hopeful fan asked, “Season finale, correct?” Gunn assured, “Season finale, correct.” The remark has fueled speculation that a second season could happen.

What is the current status of Lanterns Season 2?

HBO has not officially renewed Lanterns for Season 2 yet. However, Chris Mundy has already started a writers’ room to explore potential stories for a second season

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof said, “If it’s successful and people love it, there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons. But I think Chris Mundy has already started a new writers’ room, figuring out what new stories could be for Lanterns.”

Although this doesn’t guarantee a renewal, the writers’ room suggests the creative team is preparing for the possibility of a second season. Furthermore, Aaron Pierre is expected to reprise his role as John Stewart in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. So, Pierre’s John Stewart is expected to have a continued presence in the DCU.

Created by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, Lanterns is part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The show follows Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder on Earth that leads to a larger cosmic mystery.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan alongside Pierre as John Stewart. The supporting cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jason Ritter, and Laura Linney.

The Season 1 finale, titled “Dirt and Stars,” airs on October 4.
