'KPop Demon Hunters' Legendary Success Is Further Proof Netflix Has Been Messing Up All Along

No film has dominated the pop culture discussion this summer as quickly and surprisingly as KPop Demon Hunters. The film was made by Sony Pictures Animation, but was released directly to Netflix as part of a first-look deal between the streamer and Sony Pictures. They probably regret their decision, but not as much as Netflix for releasing it on streaming first as part of their usual model, one they've stuck with for years now. The fact that the movie was so successful despite being available on streaming since mid-June blows a massive hole in their belief that viewers prefer to watch films at home. Slowly, we've seen them grudgingly start to move away from that strategy, and now Netflix has received a golden opportunity to fully embrace the theatrical experience and make all sorts of money, at least if they can play their cards right.
