Kit Harington explained why he joined HBO’s Harry Potter amid backlash. The upcoming series has been embroiled in controversy for several reasons, including author J. K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues.

In a recent interview with TODAY’s Craig Melvin, Kit Harington opened up about joining the cast of HBO’s Harry Potter series.

“I’ve been a lifelong Harry Potter fan,” the Game of Thrones actor shared. “I was a fan when I was a kid, and then I rediscovered it as an adult, listening to it every night. I listen to it every single night, and it helps me go to sleep, and I know other people do that as well, so they’re really important books to me.”

“When I knew this was happening as a series, I thought it was the best idea,” Harington added. “I love the films, but with this, they can really explore the books at their fullest, and for a book nerd like me, that was a really great idea. So it was one that I had eyes on, I really wanted to be in it, and the part I’m playing is just the best.”

Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of the series. Kenneth Branagh previously portrayed the character in the Harry Potter film series starring Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard.

What do we know about Harry Potter season 2

Season 2 of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter is based on J. K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second book in her original series. The show has already welcomed several new cast members who will be introduced in Season 2.

In addition to Harington as Lockhart, Season 2 will star Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley, Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey, and Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle. Bonnie Hill has replaced Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley for the second season.

Meanwhile, Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton play the main trio, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, respectively.

Harry Potter Season 1 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
