The Jumanji gang is back, but this time the game is playing them. Sony Pictures dropped the first trailer for the trilogy’s final installment, teasing a wild new twist for the franchise’s biggest stars.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and more return in the Jumanji: Open World trailer

Sony Pictures unveiled the debut trailer for Jumanji: Open World on Tuesday. The footage showcases a fresh twist where the video game’s characters escape their console and enter the real world. Jake Kasdan directs the concluding chapter of the hit action-adventure trilogy. The studio has set an exclusive theatrical release for Christmas Day.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan return as the franchise’s beloved video game avatars. However, this time around, the trailer depicts them as glitchy, limited versions of their characters navigating everyday life.

Additionally, Alex Wolff’s character addresses the predicament directly in the footage. “We have a problem. They’re video game characters, but they’re stuck in demo mode,” he states. Meanwhile, Nick Jonas, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito complete the cast.

Kasdan developed the screenplay with co-writers Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Furthermore, Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia share producing duties on the project. Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s book serves as the source material for the franchise.

Previously, the series found new life with 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That installment followed a group of teenagers who become trapped inside a video game as adult avatars. It earned over $950 million at the worldwide box office. Subsequently, its 2019 follow-up The Next Level collected more than $801 million globally. Robin Williams headlined the original 1995 film adaptation before the modern reboot launched.

Earlier this year, Johnson, Hart and Black presented the movie’s earliest footage at CinemaCon. The trio also announced the Open World title during that same appearance. Moreover, Black shared his excitement about the production with the audience. “I’ve never had more fun working on a movie. This is my favorite so far,” he remarked to attendees.
