Jonas Blue sat down with us during his New York City tour stop to discuss his recent “Madan” remix and how he constantly evolves his sound.
At 12 years old, a young Jonas Blue walked into a record store in London and heard a song that would quietly shape his musical life. What he encountered in that moment stayed with him for years to come. It was a richly expressive African sound, driven by native rhythms rooted in the Malian Mandé musical tradition and featuring vocals by Salif Keïta, widely known as the “Golden Voice of Africa.” That song was “Madan.”
“I’d never heard those kind of African vocals on house music before,” Blue recalled. “Growing up hearing English songs on the radio, then hearing these African chant vocals on a very funky groove — that was very inspiring to me.”
More than two decades later, that formative listening experience has come full circle. Now based in Miami, the British producer and DJ — globally known for his chart-topping hits like “Fast Car,” “Polaroid,” and “Perfect Strangers“ — has returned to the track that never quite left him. His latest release reimagines Salif Keïta’s cult classic, incorporating the original vocals from the African icon himself.
The opportunity emerged when Blue’s label approached him, well aware of both his momentum and his longstanding connection to “Madan.” “Universal Music France asked me if I wanted to do a new version of ‘Madan,'” he said. “They knew I liked it, and they liked my Malive collaboration, ‘Edge of Desire.’ They wanted to see if I could give some of that new flavor to ‘Madan.’ Last summer in Ibiza, I loaded up all the sessions and got to work. It was like a childhood dream for me.”
Working with Keïta’s original vocal stems was a defining moment for Jonas Blue. “When I had all the vocals up on the computer, I was like, wow, this guy’s voice is just incredible, very unique,” he said. “Salif had to approve my mix, so I guess he liked it!” That approval carried its own quiet but meaningful weight for Blue.
With the backing of a widely recognized African legend, Jonas Blue wasted no time taking it to the dancefloor. He debuted the track during Defected‘s closing party at Pacha Ibiza last summer, one of dance music’s most iconic stages.
“It was an amazing party. I’ve been playing Pacha for many years, but to do the Defected closing of the summer, and to have this version of ‘Madan,’ it was a real moment,” Blue recalled. “Just to see the crowd’s reaction, where everyone was singing along, that was a really special moment. You had to be there.”
On a dancefloor where the energy was already primed for euphoria, “Madan” hit differently. But the release also marks another confident step in Blue’s ongoing sonic evolution. In recent years, he has explored a deeper house groove while maintaining the melodic sensibility that has defined his commercial hits.
“Over time, my style has changed,” Blue said. “I still love pop songs. Although my last single, ‘Edge of Desire,’ sounds different from what my audience knows me for, it’s written with the same mentality as ‘Mama,’ ‘Rise,’ or ‘By Your Side.’ Just with a different style of production underneath.”
Even some of the biggest DJs today, their sound is very different from what they were doing five years ago. You have to constantly move, otherwise you get left behind.
Jonas BlueHis reimagining of “Madan” resonates far beyond the dancefloor, appealing equally to fans of his pop catalog and deeper house productions. The track carries real emotional depth beyond its club energy, a balance that was on full display during his New York City tour stop at Superior Ingredients on April 25. Despite the relentless rain outside, the crowd showed up and danced their hearts out, standing testament to how strongly his melodies connect.
“I try to find ways of using some of the vocals and some of the musical elements from the old songs and making new versions of those,” he said. “Like tonight — New York is a place where, when I started coming here a long time ago, I was coming to very underground club nights. So I’m trying to fuse some of that with the pop stuff and to give people something new.”
With a string of global tour dates ahead, including stops in Las Vegas,Indonesia,Japan, and a residency at Hï Ibiza, Jonas Blue is poised for a busy summer and fall season. Amid the hectic tour grind, “Madan” stands as something beyond another new single. It’s a personal milestone, and a reminder that the little boy who heard something extraordinary in a record shop is now professionally linked to it.
“My 12-year-old self — if he saw me making this new version of ‘Madan’ the way it is, I think he’d be smiling, he’d be jumping, he’d be dancing, and he’d be very happy,” Blue said with a laugh. “And he’d buy it on vinyl, for sure.”
