Joker: DC Villain Gets New TV Show Set After Batman Gets Murdered

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have announced a new Joker TV show with a unique twist. The series was a part of multiple announcements at this year’s Annecy International Film Festival in France.

What do we know about the new Joker TV show?

The new anime series about Batman’s villain is called Joker: Laugh Riot. The show will be set in a world where Batman has been murdered, with the Joker on a quest to track down his killer. DC Studios is producing the show in collaboration with WB Animation and Sola Entertainment.

The show’s official logline reads, “When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.”

DC Studios’ first anime project, Joker: Laugh Riot, will be directed by Yasuhiro Aoki with Jim Krieg producing. No timeline was provided for when the show will debut, but a straight-to-series order has been given.

Aoki previously helmed 2025’s ChaO and has worked on various other anime projects, including Psycho-Pass, LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim, multiple Naruto movies, Halo Legends, and more. Crucially, Aoki also has experience in the world of DC and Gotham, as the filmmaker previously helmed a key segment in 2009’s Batman: Gotham Knight. Aoki’s ChaO also won the Jury Prize at this year’s Annecy festival.

James Krieg has worked on multiple DC animated projects, including the upcoming Batman: Knightfall movie. Besides producing DC projects, Krieg has also written multiple high-profile DC animated features, including the three-part Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths animated movies.

Joker: Laugh Riot will be released at an unknown time.
