John Malkovich’s Oscar Chances Get Stronger With New Wild Horse Nine, Sam Rockwell Also Stars

John Malkovich is getting a lot of attention in the Best Actor category for his leading role in Wild Horse Nine. The two-time Oscar nominee is starring alongside Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell in the dark comedy by Martin McDonagh. The filmmaker is known for The Banshees of Inisherin and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Wild Horse Nine is set in the weeks leading up to the 1973 Chilean coup d’état and follows two CIA agents sent to Easter Island. Malkovich plays Chris, a veteran operative who is paired with Rockwell’s Lee, a more aggressive and unpredictable agent.

The two are sent away from Santiago by their bureau chief, MJ, played by Steve Buscemi. What begins as a secret assignment quickly becomes more complicated as the agents deal with political tensions, personal problems, and growing distrust of one another.

Written and directed by McDonagh, Wild Horse Nine mixes dark comedy with political drama. The cast also includes Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Parker Posey, and musician Tom Waits.

What happens in Wild Horse Nine trailer?

The situation eventually falls apart as pressure from Washington increases and political unrest grows on the Chilean mainland. Lee’s behavior also becomes more unstable, turning the quiet island assignment into a dangerous confrontation.

Wild Horse Nine is scheduled to open in movie theaters on November 6.
