Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has become a TV staple over the past few decades, transforming the lives of many contestants overnight.
And while it always seems easy when you’re playing along at home, it’s a different story if you’re actually in the hotseat, with the prospect of losing thousands of pounds looming large.
Which is where the lifelines for contestants come in, aimed at giving them a helping hand to move up the board.
Each player who makes it to the hotseat has four options: phone a friend, ask the audience, 50/50 (which removes two wrong answers) or the latest addition — asking host Jeremy Clarkson what he thinks.
While turning to the presenter for the answer might seem like a good idea, he’s often as lost as the contestant — as was the case on last night’s show. Twice.
Contestant Aisling Carolan, from Edinburgh, had made it as far as the £2,000 question when she was faced with this: What precedes ‘….Amazing Spaces’ in the title of a Channel 4 property series?
The options were: Kevin McCloud’s, Kirstie and Phil’s, Sarah Beeny’s and George Clarke’s, and Aisling was quick to admit: ‘I can’t remember the name of it. Could I ask you please?’
‘Now, this is the industry I work in,’ he said, ‘and all I know for sure is it’s not Kevin McCloud, because he’s Grand Designs.’
‘To be honest, I’ve never heard of George Clarke.’
Ultimately he advised Aisling to ‘go for 50/50, and that’s my final answer’, a decision which left Aisling with Sarah Beeny and George Clarke.
In the end she incorrectly guessed Sarah Beeny, seeing her leave the studio with just £1,000, saying ‘It is what it is’ as she left the set.
That said, it wasn’t the first question the host stumbled over on Sunday night’s show.
Earlier on in the programme, contestant Milan Pathak from West Hampstead was left struggling with the question: Which king of England was known as the Merry Monarch? William I, Edward VI, Charles II or John.
Having made it as far as the £32,000 mark, the stakes were a lot higher for Milan, who was unsure of the answer and declared: ‘I’d like to ask you, Jeremy.’
And once again Clarkson was left baffled. ‘William I was William the Conqueror…I don’t think he was particularly merry,’ he said.
‘John was Mr Magna Carta. Charles II — how can you be happy when you’ve seen your dad’s head rolling down Whitehall? Which leaves us with Edward VI about which I know nothing,’ he added.
‘I’ve given you all I can give I’m afraid and that’s my final answer.’
All of which left the contestant using another of his lifelines as he phoned a friend, before ultimately opting for Edward VI as his final answer.
It turned out to be wrong, with the correct answer being Charles II, meaning Milan missed out on £64,000 and went home with £32,000 instead.
Clarkson’s efforts didn’t illicit much sympathy on social media, with folks at home quick to make their views known.
‘Jeremy not helping at all 2 times in a row tonight,’ one person quipped wrote, while another added: ‘Surely he’s heard of George Clarke.’
It comes just a week after one unfortunate contestant crashed out of the competition without winning a thing.
All of which proves it’s a lot harder when you’re not watching from the comfort of your sofa.
