Jason Statham & Rainn Wilson Killer Shark Movie With a Twist Hits HBO Max Today

Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson‘s sci-fi shark movie has found a new streaming home on HBO Max today, September 23. The action thriller follows an elite oceanic rescue team whose deep-sea expedition turns catastrophic when they are trapped by a 75-foot shark long believed to be extinct.

The Meg is now available to stream on HBO Max. Jon Turteltaub directed the intense survival film from a screenplay co-written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber. The film is inspired by Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.

Warner Bros. Pictures originally released the film in theaters on August 10, 2018. According to Box Office Mojo, the blockbuster grossed over $529 million worldwide against a $130 million production budget.

What to know about Jason Statham’s massive shark showdown

The plot centers on Jonas Taylor, played by Jason Statham, an ex-deep-sea rescue diver who is called back into action. He joins a rescue mission after an underwater research station comes under attack. Rainn Wilson plays Jack Morris, the billionaire bankrolling the research station.

The team soon discovers that the threat is a megalodon, a massive shark believed to have been extinct for over two million years. Jonas must help rescue the trapped crew while dealing with the creature’s return to the ocean’s surface.

After the megalodon escapes the trench, the crew decides to kill it with poison. However, their plan goes wrong when they discover that another, larger megalodon has also escaped. The fight eventually moves to a crowded beach in Sanya Bay, China.

Alongside Statham and Wilson, the ensemble cast features Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, and Cliff Curtis. While the film delivered strong commercial returns, it drew mixed reactions from critics and audiences, currently holding a 47% Tomatometer score and a 44% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A direct sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, was released in 2023. The Meg is streaming now on Max.
