James Gunn is pushing back against fans who think Lanterns has treated Hal Jordan like an afterthought. Gunn argued that the character remains central to the series, pointing out that Hal has appeared in every episode released so far and has received more live-action screen time than ever before.

Gunn also addressed concerns surrounding Hal’s apparent fate. Knowing when a character dies, he explained, does not automatically mean the story will immediately remove that character from the picture. He said that the creative team respects Hal, loves the character, and sees him as a major reason the series has connected with both longtime fans and newcomers.
“Hal’s the star of the TV series & he’s in all the episodes so far,” Gunn wrote on Threads. He also praised Kyle Chandler’s performance and made his position clear with a short response to unhappy viewers saying, “Sorry if you don’t like it.”
Fans, meanwhile, remain split between accepting the story and hoping Hal gets another shot in the DC Universe. One fan asked Gunn directly to confirm that Hal has a future, while another urged him to bring back a younger version of the character. Others pointed out that being dead in the DC Universe does not necessarily mean staying gone forever.
Some took a more positive view of the situation. One fan said that the strong reaction to Hal’s death showed how engrossed audiences had become, while another said the character could still return in the future as a “Halogram.” Kyle Chandler’s casting also received plenty of praise, with one fan calling him “absolute peak casting.”
There is still plenty of mystery left on the table as Lanterns rolls forward. Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the series, with Laura Linney, Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, and many more. Six episodes are already out on HBO and HBO Max, leaving viewers with plenty of questions about where the story heads next.
