Daniel Craig as James Bond in 2012's SkyfallThe wait to find out who will be the next James Bond has been an especially long one – so much so that the franchise’s big bosses are now taking it upon themselves to explain what exactly is going on.
Daniel Craig famously left the role with his last outing as 007 in 2021’s No Time To Die, with speculation about who will be taking over the iconic character not relenting for the last five years.
No Time To Die also marked the last Bond instalment under the creative control of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, following Amazon MGM Studios taking over the rights in February 2025.
During Amazon MGM Studios’ presentation at CinemaCon this week, the studio’s head of film Courtenay Valenti offered an explanation as to why we still seem no closer to finding out who will play the next iteration of the iconic secret agent.
“I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond,” she said.
“Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”
Courtenay Valenti on stage at CinemaConValenti also spoke about director Denis Villeneuve, who was confirmed last year to be behind the lens for the 26th Bond film.
“What I can tell you is this: When you pair one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class filmmaking team, including the brilliant director Denis Villeneuve, extraordinary producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, executive producer Tanya Lapointe, and screenwriter Steven Knight, you’re setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy,” Valenti enthused.
“That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”
Villeneuve currently has his hands full with the upcoming third Dune movie, making reports that Bond filming will start at the end of 2026 after its release not totally out of the question.
As for who will play the title character, some big names in the mix include Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The topic of the next 007 is such a potent one that Riz Ahmed has even made a whole acclaimed TV series on the subject in the meantime, exploring what it’s like to become the centre of a public storm when your name enters the mix to play the famous spy.
