Insidious 6 director Jacob Chase revealed his all-time favorite movie for jump scares, and his pick might surprise horror fans. The filmmaker broke down what makes the perfect scare and named his standout sequences from across the genre.

Jacob Chase picks The Conjuring 2 for movie with best jump scare

Insidious 6 director Jacob Chase names The Conjuring 2 as the movie with the best jump scares. Chase shared his pick during an interview with The Spook House Podcast on August 21. The sixth Insidious installment hits theaters today across the United States.

Before naming his top pick, Chase praises several films for their approach to scares. He highlights The Ring for never telegraphing a potential scare to audiences. Chase specifically points to the girl-in-the-closet moment as a standout in that film. He also credits The Haunting of Hill House’s car scene for catching viewers off guard during casual conversation. Chase then cites Jaws and even E.T. as early influences on his understanding of effective jump scares.

However, Chase ultimately singles out The Conjuring 2 as his top pick. “The first Conjuring movie is a pretty wall-to-wall masterclass of scares,” Chase says during the interview. He then adds that “the second one I think has even more of my favorite scare scenes.” James Wan directed The Conjuring 2, and he also produced Chase’s new Insidious film.

Chase also discusses his own favorite scares from Insidious: Out of the Further during the conversation. He highlights the pillow fort sequence as a personal standout from the new movie. Chase explains that the scene felt like bringing a haunted house to life on screen. He also teases a dentist sequence and a closet scene toward the film’s climax.

The Conjuring 2 earned an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 253 critic reviews. It grossed $323 million worldwide against a $40 million budget back in 2016. Insidious: Out of the Further currently holds a 58% Rotten Tomatoes score from 64 critic reviews. Sony Pictures is projecting a $25 million opening weekend debut for the new horror sequel.
