The Indiana Fever camp hasn’t been short of drama this season. From media narratives around Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White to on-court tussles with other teams, a lot seems to be going on this season. Now, the team is witnessing yet another controversial episode for their injury report ahead of their upcoming game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Clark is the only player listed as probable for the game in the report due to her lingering back injury, which is a no-brainer given the tactics the team has followed in the last few games.

For context, the Indiana Fever has listed Caitlin Clark as probable in every game of their last few weeks. It doesn’t come in isolation, though, as this has been the case for every game since she sat out against the Portland Fire.

In that game, CC was ruled out just two hours before the game due to her back injury. Notably, Clark has dealt with these back concerns since Indiana’s season opener against the Dallas Wings. It is the same injury that forced Clark to leave the court during that game.

Now, the interesting part was that she wasn’t even listed in the injury report (not even as probable as questionable) for the Portland game. This immediately caught the league’s attention.

As per the guidelines, Clark should have been included in the injury report. It got even more emphasis because White herself mentioned that Clark couldn’t practice the day before the game. The situation caused a lot of frenzy on social media. However, Clark shared that this could be the trend for the rest of the season.

“At this point, maybe I’ll need to be listed as soreness on every injury report,” she said on May 22nd. “If I don’t feel a hundred percent confident in my body on game five of the year, I don’t know if that’s really worth it in that scenario. I’m sore. That’s just the reality of it.”

Some fans even allegedly stated on social media that Clark’s absence from the game was part of a broader workload management scheme. While that was later deemed false, Clark herself admitted that even her mother learned of her absence 40 minutes before the fans did.

However, the WNBA wasn’t going to let that slip and handed the Indiana Fever a warning. To avoid a recurrence of this situation, the Fever head coach figured out the idea to list Clark as probable in every injury report, especially considering the Fever guard’s back concerns.

“The most important thing is that what happened last week, we don’t want that to happen again,” White had said during one of her press conferences. “Just to make sure that there’s clarity and no issues with league policy, I think that we will (list her as probable).”

The reflection of White’s plan has been visible in every injury report since then. And it was no different for the Phoenix game. But this hasn’t been well-received by fans since the report on the Mercury game came out.

Fans Blame the Indiana Fever for Putting Fans in the Dark With Caitlin Clark’s Injury Status Management

“This is a major reason attendance is falling. Y’all hold her status as hostage. Sub patterns are all over the place. There is no consistency in anything you do. No one can trust that their favorite player will be playing any substantial minutes that game outside of Mitchell. All trust is lost. You do not operate in good faith. Time to move on,” a fan wrote.

“You’re petty clowns with this “probable” BS, but why would you tarnish the name of your sponsor @orthoindy with these childish antics?” stated another.

It’s not a secret anymore that Caitlin Clark is the one who drives the Indiana Fever’s in-arena attendance. Thus, Clark being listed as probable in every game creates uncertainty and ambiguity among fans.

It might even hamper fan attendance at these games. But so far, it hasn’t been the case, for context. The last four home games of Indiana have seen 15,000+ fans turn out at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, including the 17,000+ the Fever drew against the Atlanta Dream.

“I will not be buying any Fever tickets until I know for a fact CC will be playing. She is the only reason I would go for a Fever game. I’m from Iowa and my time to travel to see CC is limited,” remarked a netizen.

One of the fans, yet again, doubled down on that uncertainty factor, remarking that one can attend an Indiana Fever game without being sure of Clark’s participation. After all, every Fever fan would of course want to watch a generational player like CC if they had paid the tickets for a game. But this ‘probable’ pattern in the report creates a hindrance in that regard.

“WNBA should investigate Fever. How can a player always be probable to play? Then we can say every player is probable to play. Just in case right!! God knows what will happen tomorrow. This is cheating at its best…How you seen anything like this in any major league???” chimed in another.

“This is getting out of hand every week is Probable. This probability seems to be used as a weapon for discipline. No other athlete in professional sports is PROBABLE since the warning. But the W shouldn’t be considered a professional sport, they don’t even follow their own rules,” summed up another.

From a broader perspective, the sentiments of the comment do make sense. The sole purpose of the probable column is used when there’s uncertainty with the player’s fitness. But in this case, Clark has played 12 back-to-back games after being listed as probable.

Indeed, it’s a cheeky idea to avoid any league violation. But this persistent pattern isn’t good for the Indiana Fever’s brand credibility, because this system undermines the essence of discipline that the league’s policy seeks to uphold and protect.
