As we head into spooky season, now feels as good a time as any to check out this year’s biggest horror movie to date if you’ve not had the chance to already.
Released in cinemas back in May, Obsession stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarette as Bear and Nikki, two close friends whose whole world is turned upside down when the former makes a wish that the latter would love him “more than anyone in the whole fucking world”.
Obsession was met with rare acclaim for a horror movie, and has gone on to become one of 2026’s biggest box office successes – particularly impressive for a film by a first-time director, based on an original idea and story, without any A-list stars in its main cast.
Now, with 2027’s awards season starting to become more than a glimmer in the distance, debates are starting about how much recognition Obsession is likely to get – considering how often horror is completely snubbed at the likes of the Oscars.
One thing that seems increasingly likely is that Inde will nab her first Oscar nomination for her work as Nikki, something the woman herself is putting out of her mind for the time being.
Inde Navarette as Nikki in Obsession“It’s not that I don’t care about it,” she told Complex back in June.
She explained: “I’m very sensitive, so I kind of want to protect my peace. I don’t want to get too excited about something that may or may not happen.
“So I’m kind of just taking it day by day and being excited about what that day brings.”
Before being cast in Obsession, Inde was best known for her work in the controversial Netflix teen drama 13 Reasons Why, as well as the superhero drama Superman & Lois.
Following her breakthrough role, she’s also set to join the MCU as Rogue in the next X-Men movie, joining a cast that also includes the likes of Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink, Heartstopper’s Kit Connor, East Of Eden’s Christopher Abbott and Oscar nominee Adam Driver.

Obsession is available to purchase now on YouTube, Sky Store and other platforms.
