Fox is returning to the well of 1980s nostalgia, ordering a contemporary reimagining of a beloved series about a wandering angel for the 2027-28 television season. The project comes as the network prepares to debut its Baywatch reboot this coming season, part of a deliberate strategy to mine familiar titles for a modern audience.
Highway to Heaven reboot is in development at Fox
The premise borrows the original’s framework while aiming for a fresh approach. A probationary angel travels to Earth to help people in need, earning his wings through acts of compassion. Additionally, Katims described the project as both emotional and unexpected territory for him.
Jason Katims, known for Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, will write and executive-produce the Highway to Heaven reboot. He will also serve as showrunner. Furthermore, Amblin Television and Michael Landon Productions are partnering on the reboot, which Fox Entertainment Studios will produce. Fox retains full ownership of the series, while Fox Entertainment Global manages worldwide distribution.
“I’m excited by the challenge of putting a contemporary lens on this classic tale,” Katims told Deadline. “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me — and fun. I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man.”
Landon created the original Highway to Heaven, which aired on NBC for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. He starred as Jonathan Smith, a probationary angel sent by “The Boss” to perform good deeds on Earth. Meanwhile, Victor French co-starred as Mark Gordon, a retired policeman who traveled alongside Smith and helped with each new assignment.
Moreover, Fox has increasingly leaned into feel-good programming. This category has gained traction with viewers seeking optimism and adventure. The network found success with original series such as Doc and the fully-owned medical drama Best Medicine.
Ultimately, ordering a Highway to Heaven reboot extends that lineup, betting that the show’s themes of compassion and second chances will resonate with contemporary audiences.
