Ian McKellen just revealed the surprising real-world inspiration behind his most intense Magneto scene in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor shared a surprising political anecdote during a recent festival appearance in Rome.
How Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago inspired Ian McKellen’s Magneto performance
Ian McKellen revealed he channeled his hatred for Donald Trump while filming Avengers: Doomsday. The 87-year-old actor shared this anecdote at the Cinema in Piazza festival in Rome.
McKellen returns as his iconic X-Men villain Magneto in the upcoming Marvel film. The Russo Brothers directed the film and pushed McKellen to intensify his performance during one scene. They specifically instructed him to channel real anger into Magneto’s destructive rampage.
The directors told McKellen “to look more furious” during one action sequence. They wanted him to “make it look as if you hate what you’re destroying.” McKellen responded by standing there and shouting “Mar-a-Lago!” on set.
Mar-a-Lago is a resort in Palm Beach, Florida, that Trump has owned since 1985. He regularly visits the property and has used it for meetings with international leaders. McKellen’s remark earned laughs from the audience at the Rome festival.
The Cinema in Piazza festival features open-air screenings and Q&As that are free to the public. McKellen shared the anecdote during one of these public sessions. The Guardian first reported his comments from the event.
McKellen has publicly criticized Trump on multiple occasions in the past. During Trump’s first presidency in 2017, he called out the administration for failing to protect LGBTQ+ rights. The White House did not acknowledge Pride Month that year.
The administration also rolled back the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order at the time. McKellen told Variety in 2017 that this was “appalling and quite unnecessary and very un-American.” He added that “the gay rights movement began in America” (via Variety).
McKellen also criticized Trump’s communication style during that same 2017 interview. He said Trump was “a very bad communicator, at least to me.” He urged the then-president to “get more straightforward, Donald.”
