New Zealand's Creamerie, a dystopian satire with a touch of sci-fi, conceals neither its influences nor its intentional timing. A joint collaboration between the three lead actresses and director Roseanne Liang, the two-season-and-counting series was partially inspired by The Handmaid's Tale and premiered in 2021, roughly one year after the COVID-19 pandemic began. As its protagonists realize that their so-called equitable world is actually a sham (and a living hell, besides), Creamerie both addresses topical social commentary with the proper severity and comedically lampoons those same oppressive structures.
