Stephen King‘s Carrie has terrified audiences for five decades, but Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation might serve a far greater purpose than a simple remake. The horror director has hinted that his version of Carrie White could become a backdoor entry point into his long-gestating The Dark Tower project, a universe that previously collapsed on screen.

Stephen King’s Carrie could become a surprising door to The Dark Tower

Flanagan acknowledged the possibility with cautious enthusiasm. “I may have asked this very question several times along the way,” he told Entertainment Weekly, laughing at the implications. “It’s certainly not impossible. There are characters in the Tower canon who would serve a very specific purpose in that story, who audiences wouldn’t necessarily recognize because they only exist in certain books.”

He pointed to Insomnia, King’s 1994 tie-in novel, as a template. “Carrie White could achieve the same narrative purpose pretty cleanly,” Flanagan explained. “You could say the same, though, of Abra Stone [from Doctor Sleep], you could say the same about Danny Torrance [from The Shining]. How the various Stephen King worlds can connect is always on my mind.”

The director’s ambitions extend beyond television. Flanagan wants five seasons of a Dark Tower television series on Prime Video, plus two standalone films. But that future remains distant. The Dark Tower already flopped once at the box office in 2017, though Flanagan’s serialized approach could differ vastly from that misfire.

For now, Flanagan’s immediate priority is simpler: make Carrie feel like a complete, satisfying season of television; one that introduces a sheltered girl raised by a religious mother and conspiracy-minded father, experiencing public school and online cruelty for the first time.

Whether Carrie White ultimately becomes a cornerstone of Flanagan’s Dark Tower vision depends on choices yet to be made. But the connective tissue between King’s worlds, as Flanagan suggests, remains endlessly tantalizing.
