Recent comments from one of its stars suggests House of the Dragon Season 3 will repeat Season 2’s biggest mistake. One of the most memorable showdowns in Fire & Blood, the book that inspired House of the Dragon, is the Battle Above the Gods Eye between Daemon Targaryen and his nephew, Aemond. While many had hoped the aerial battle would conclude Season 3, it looks like it has been pushed to Season 4.

While speaking with SFX magazine, Matt Smith, who plays Daemon in House of the Dragon, says he has not had many conversations about the book elements that the writers will incorporate for his character. When asked about Gods Eye, Smith is unsure how it will play out.

“One assumes they’re headed there, but you never know,” Smith said. “It’s quite present in the story, isn’t it? Even in the book, it’s been illustrated. It’s surely got to head there, but I’m not privy to the details of it until the script. But I’m going to cross my fingers too.”

House of the Dragon’s Gods Eye battle is taking too long to reach the screen

One of the biggest complaints about House of the Dragon Season 2 involved the show’s pacing. It was a lot of build-up and very little payoff. The back half of Season 2 was building toward the Battle of the Gullet, one of the bloodiest battles in Westeros’ history. However, the Battle of the Gullet never came and was pushed to the beginning of Season 3.

Is it possible that Smith is lying to protect spoilers for Season 3? Sure. If we take Smith at his word and assume Gods Eye is coming in Season 4, then House of the Dragon could potentially be repeating the same pacing mistake that plagued Season 2. The fans do not want another season of build-up toward a finale that falls flat. Gods Eye felt like a natural conclusion to Season 3.

Season 4 is expected to air in 2028 and serve as the conclusion to the epic HBO show. Moving Gods Eye to Season 4 is certainly a risk as it adds another key moment that must be covered before the show’s end. Considering how rushed the final season of Game of Thrones felt, we can only hope the House of the Dragon writers have a plan to deliver a satisfying ending.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
