HOTD’s Emma D’Arcy Reveals What It Was Like To Leave Dragons Behind for Tom Cruise’s Digger

Emma D’Arcy stars opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming satirical black comedy movie, Digger, from director Alejandro González Iñárritu. They have garnered widespread fame for essaying the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO series House of the Dragon. In a recent interview, D’Arcy addressed the significant difference between the two projects.

D’Arcy discussed the tonal shift from House of the Dragon to Digger while speaking to Entertainment Tonight. When asked whether a role like the one in Digger gave D’Arcy “a nice break from all the dragons,” they responded, “Yeah, I got to do a comedy.”

The Truth Seekers star continued, “It was lovely to do something that has a radically different tone. Alejandro is very, very specific about that sort of tone and theatrical performance style. It’s a different mode.”

The dichotomy between the two projects is undeniable. One is a fantasy, an adaptation of the works of George R. R. Martin and part of the same fictional universe as Game of Thrones. The other tells the story of the world’s wealthiest man as he tries to save the world from the disaster he himself has caused. Details about D’Arcy’s character remain unclear.

The initial news about D’Arcy’s casting in Digger first broke back in April 2025. They said at the time, “I’m delighted to be working with such extraordinary and exacting artists as Alejandro and Tom. They are the masters of their craft, and witnessing them in combination has been a privilege.”

The cast of Digger also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, and Sandra Hüller. Iñárritu developed the movie from a screenplay he wrote with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone as an adaptation of a story by Iñárritu, Berman, and Jez Butterworth. The movie debuts in US theaters on October 2, 2026.
