Uncle Buck’s John Candy died at the age of 43 on March 4, 1994, due to a heart attack. In the upcoming documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, Macaulay Culkin recalled his relationship with the actor. In the documentary, which premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, the Home Alone actor shared that Candy recognized his father as “a monster.”

“I think he always had that really great instinct,” Culkin recalled in the documentary. “I think he saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster,” he added.

During Uncle Buck, Culkin was just 9 years old, a year before he starred in Home Alone. The now 45-year-old actor continued to talk about his father following the movie’s monumental success.

“All of a sudden, the fame and the money came, and he became an infamous monster,” Culkin explained. “He was already not a good guy. I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, ‘Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything’s alright? Everything good at home? Alright,” the actor recalled.

The care that Candy showed left a lasting impression on Culkin. He shared how Candy’s nature was a “a testament to the kind of man he was” and how his “paternal” presence helped him a lot.

“It doesn’t happen that often,” Culkin explained. “It actually happened less as time went on. I wish I got more of that in my life. It’s important that I remember that. I remember John caring when not a lot of people did.”

The documentary is scheduled to release on October 10, 2025, on Amazon’s Prime Video.
