Before HBO brought it back to life, the zombie genre was on its way out the door. The Walking Dead’s global popularity had brought a wave of the undead in the 2010s, but it cooled off when the stories got stale, the thematic subtext that humans are the real monsters got old, and The Walking Dead expanded into a Marvel-style cinematic universe with only diehard fans still coming back for more.
